I though that it would be interesting to learn what computers members are driving so I will start the ball rolling with details of my own network.

BEDROOM

A Dell Latitude D810 laptop which I primarily use to watch movies in bed. It is a heavy laptop but has excellent graphics. Apart from its built in equipment it has an

external DVD writer, and three external laptop drives (2x250 and 1x160) for storing AVI movies that I download from the net. It also has an external USB TV tuner, powered

external speakers, powered TV antenna and headphones. It has wireless and cable ethernet. That laptop runs XP Pro.

STUDY

A full tower (almost 3 feet high) Aopen steel case Pentium 4 which the grandchildren use to surf the net and play games when they regularly visit. It has a 2.4 Intel chip,

RAID and 4 hard drives with a dvd burner and a dvd reader. It also has external powered speakers and a TV tuner. It is attached to the network by cable and has a 19inch CRT

monitor. It has 2 GB memory, a powered external 500 Mb drive (which I use for backup purposes) and a HP Desktop inkjet printer. That used to be my mnain machine until I

upgraded it a few weeks ago. It has a 256MB good quality graphics card. That machine runs XP Pro and Windows 7 on a dual boot.

GARAGE OFFICE

A tower Aopen steel case with a 2.4 Celeron chip and 2GB memory with a 17 inch CRT monitor which I primarily use for backup purposes. It has a DVD burner and a DVD readxer

and is attached to the network with an ethernet cable. It has a Radio Shack audio amplifier, large external speakers, a Panasonic KX-P6500 laser printer, a HP 845C inkjet

printer. an epsom scanner, a removeable drawer with two hard drives and a 17inch CRT monitor. It also has a separate computer desk and office chair. That machine runs XP Pro.

And my main machine

An ASUS P7H55D -m EVO motherboard with 8 GB DDR43 memory
An Elite Coolmaster case with an extreme ATX 500W power supply
A Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card 1GB
An Intel Core i5 750 LGA1156 CPU
Hitachi 1TB SATA2 hard drive
External 1TB hard drive
A large amplifier (ex HiFi equipment) with radio and 4 large speakers (also HiFi)
1 DNTV TV tuner attached to an external antenna
A Brother HL-2140 Laser Printer
A Brother DCP 165C Printer and Scanner
Dual Monitors (1 23inch Acer LCD and a 22inch Samsung LCD)
A Netgear DGN2000 Wireless Router
Microsoft wireless keyboard and Laser Mouse
VOIP telephone and fax
A Canon Fax- JX200

And my 64bit Windows7 is currently running 8 virtual machines including Windows7 (64 and 32bit), OSX and Linux Mandriva,

I note that they have been pushing on TV that the 'elderley' should become involved in computers.

Do you think that the above qualifies this 80 year old who has been surfing the net and using computers (literally on a daily basis) for 30 years or do you suggest that I

should attend one of those computer courses that they have been advertising for senior citizens? The trouble is that I probably bought my first TRS-80 and surfed the net

before browsers were even heard off before most of the instructors were born.

Ireland is an...

I just got this by email from a Donegal friend who lives in England. I thought it might help you all sort out the Irish question.

Ireland is an island to the west of Britain but Northern Ireland is just off the mainland – not the Irish mainland, the British mainland.

The capital of Ireland is Dublin. It has a population of a million people, all of whom will be shopping in Newry this afternoon. They travel to Newry because it is in the North, which is not part of Ireland but accepts Euros.

Under the Irish constitution, the North used to be in Ireland, but a successful 30-year campaign of violence for Irish unity ensured that it is now definitely in the UK. Had the campaign lasted longer the North might now be in France.

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. It has a population of half a million, half of whom have houses in Donegal. Donegal is in the north but not in the North. It is in the South. No, not the south, the South.

There are two parliaments in Ireland. The Dublin parliament is called the Dáil, (pronounced “Doyle”), an Irish word meaning a place where banks receive taxpayers’ money. The one in Belfast is called Stormont, an Anglo-Saxon word meaning placebo, or deliberately ineffective drug.

Their respective jurisdictions are defined by the border, an imaginary line on the map to show fuel launderers where to dump chemical waste.

Protestants are in favour of the border, which generates millions of pounds in smuggling for Catholics, who are opposed to it.

Travel between the two states is complicated because Ireland is the only country in the world with two M1 motorways. The one in the North goes west to avoid the south and the one in the South goes north to avoid the price of drink.

We have two types of democracy in Ireland. Dublin democracy works by holding a referendum and then allowing the government to judge the result. If the government thinks the result is wrong, the referendum is held again. Twice in recent years the government decided the people’s choice was wrong and ordered a new referendum.

Belfast democracy works differently. It has a parliament with no opposition, so the government is always right. This system generates envy in many world capitals, especially Dublin.

Ireland has three economies – northern, southern and black. Only the black economy is in the black. The other two are in the red.

All versions of the IRA claim to be the real IRA but only one of them is the Real IRA. The North’s biggest industry is the production of IRAs. Consequently, we now have the Provisional, Continuity and Real IRA. The Real IRA is by far the most popular among young graffiti writers simply because it is the easiest to spell.

I'm really not that much of a materialist, but I saw someone carrying one of these around today and I asked them if I could see it.

Well, they let me hold it, fondle it, and play with it and now I've got to have it.

Nikon D90

Gonna be about $1200 from Adorama with the 18-105 kit lens a spare battery and a UV filter to protect the lens.

That means my daughter gets to keep my D-40.

What the hell, she's already had it for the last three months.

I have three handguns.

I sure don't need all of them.

I'll ask my son who is in the Army to sell my Kimber Custom II .45 with nights sights.

There's always a market for something like that around an Army base.

That'll get me $600, so the Nikon is only gonna really cost $600, right?

For a seventy-year period, when America cared little about the education of African-Americans, and discrimination was law and custom, the...

For a seventy-year period, when America cared little about the education of African-Americans, and discrimination was law and custom, the Bordentown School was an educational utopia. An incubator for black pride and intellect, it taught values, discipline, and life skills to generations of black children.

This is the story of that remarkable school, told through testimony by Bordentown alumni, commentary by historians, and rare archival footage.

In its prime, the Bordentown School was nicknamed the "Tuskegee of the North," after Booker T. Washington's famous Alabama institute. With its 400-acre Georgian style campus, Bordentown could be mistaken for an elite private boarding school. But it was actually a co-educational public school operated by the State of New Jersey which closed the school in 1955, after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision.

The story of Bordentown is also the story of black education in America. The film examines the political and historical forces that forged the school's creation and ascent: the violent backlash against Reconstruction reforms, the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, and the birth of the Civil Rights movement. And it explores the causes of its demise, triggered—ironically—by the same advocates for social justice who, by the 1940s, came to see an all-black school as a deplorable symbol of Jim Crow.

The film combines multiple narrative strands. On one level, it maps the history of black education in America and the struggle for equal opportunity in the classroom and beyond. This "big picture" is painted by two of the country's leading scholars: David Levering Lewis, the Pulitizer Prize winning biographer of W.E.B. DuBois, and Clement Price, a respected public intellectual and expert in New Jersey black history. But the film is also deeply personal, as the life stories and memories of Bordentown alumni are woven throughout the narrative. We meet them individually, and during their bittersweet school reunion, held on the grounds of the campus 50 years after the last class graduated. The students at Bordentown came from widely diverse backgrounds and circumstances, but were all equals in the school's safe, separate space. Standards were high, discipline was strict, and the human bonds deep and nurturing. As one alumni says, "They cuddled us. And they kicked us in the butt when it was necessary."

A Place Out of Time offers a much-needed preface to the growing national discussion about our historically black institutions and their role in nurturing identity and accomplishment. What was lost, and what was gained in the march toward equality?

A Place Out of Time - The Bordentown School | PBS If you want to watch the film. It is very very good.

The Demands of the Deficit Hawks Won't Cure -- They'll Kill

Politics News

Sometimes, the most urgent truths are rolled up and hidden away in the most apparently trivial news. So if I tell you that Moody's, the leading credit rating agency, has downgraded Ireland's debt, it sounds pretty irrelevant. In fact, if you unwrap and decode this story, you'll discover the reason why you are going to be more likely to lose your job or your home soon, if Obama doesn't unleash a new starbust of stimulus soon, or if the Republicans win.

The British finance minister, George Osborne, visited Ireland a few years ago to say it was a "shining example" for Britain to mimic. When the recession hit, the country's government immediately applied the medicine Cameron and Osborne are now imposing on Britain. They argued that when the economy withers, the government needs to react like any responsible family and cut spending to pay down its debt. They warned that if they didn't do it fast, the international bond market would charge Ireland more for its liabilities, and the debt burden would become intolerable. Better to purge now, so you can get back to fiscal health as soon as possible. "Look and learn from across the Irish Sea," Osborne said.

So they have brought this vision home. Britain shows what sudden cuts to pay down the deficit look like. Prime Minister David Cameron is ordering cuts of 25 to 40 percent in almost all departments. To give you a sense of how drastic this is: arch-Conservative Margaret Thatcher actually increased public spending by 1.1 percent in real terms per year.

The consequences? The National Housing Federation says the number of homeless people will double as a result of their slashing of housing benefit. Half a million children living below the poverty line are having free school meals -- the only nutritious meal of the day for many -- cancelled. The unemployed are having £6.50 knocked off the £65 a week they have to live on. Ian Duncan Smith says "tons of elderly people" are going to be forced out of their "underoccupied" apartments in run-down housing projects. The list is long enough for a dozen columns. One minister recently told the Times the rationale behind it off-the-record: "The undeserving poor," he said, "are undeserving."

Meanwhile, a recent Financial Times headline summarised the situation at the other end of the economic heap: "Well-paid breathe collective sigh of relief."

Before power, Cameron promised his cuts would not affect "frontline" services, but only the "backroom" and "waste." Now hospital bosses have drawn up plans to slash hip operations, cataract surgery, and the number of acute hospital beds. All frontline services are facing similar shut-downs. A detailed study for Oxford University led by Dr. David Stuckler calculates that there will be 38,000 premature deaths over the next decade as a result of all this -- due to the reduced healthcare, dismantled services for the elderly and vulnerable children, increased suicides, and so on.

The Republicans want to bring this vision from Ireland and Britain to the US. They say -- yes, this is rough, yes, it hurts, but it is for a necessary purpose. If we don't do it, the bond markets will downgrade our debt and we will be even worse off. Only austerity can hold off the prospect of a debt crisis.

So let's return to the truth buried in that little story on the financial pages. Ireland has been doing exactly what the Republicans urge, with a two year headstart. What are the results? Last week, a study by the International Monetary Fund -- nobody's idea of a left-wing pressure group -- found that country's economic collapse now "exceeds that being faced by any other advanced economy, and matches episodes of the most severe economic distress [anywhere] in post-World War Two history."

Why? During a recession, ordinary consumers quite sensibly cut back and spend less. But if the government does the same, it means nobody is spending. This is bad enough for all the people who suffer immediately: the swelling army of the unemployed, the repossessed, the abandoned. But it turns out it makes its original goal -- paying off the debt -- impossible too. As the Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz explains: "If you introduce austerity measures, the amount you can raise in tax falls, and welfare payments go up -- so you don't have enough money to pay your debts anyway."

That's why the bond markets have turned on Ireland. The country introduced austerity to pay off their debts -- and the austerity killed their economy, making it impossible to pay off their debts in any case. It was self-defeating. So introducing all these cuts doesn't only inflict misery: it doesn't even achieve its professed goal.

Why would Republicans choose this as a model to copy? Another Nobel Prize-winning economist, Paul Krugman, writes this deficit hawkery "isn't based on either evidence or careful analysis... What sounds like hard-headed realism actually rests on a foundation of fantasy." Krugman points out that they incessantly warn us "invisible bond vigilantes" will beat us up if we don't cut, cut, cut -- when the real bond market is beating up the people who have cut and left their economies to bleed out.

In 2010, to preach austerity as the solution to depression is the equivalent of drilling holes in your head to cure your migraine, while dismissing aspirin as for wusses. It's a dogma, chosen because it fits with the slash-the-state instincts they learned as privileged young men in their 1980s champagne-dream.

Krugman, like most economists, says there is only one real way out. When consumer spending collapses, governments need to borrow and spend to prevent a depression -- and then pay off the debt from the proceeds of growth once we have brought the good times back. It's revealing that the countries that have done this hardest and fastest -- like South Korea, which spent a fortune on employing people to green the country's infrastructure -- have been the first to pull out of this recession, while the countries glugging Republican-juice have sunk deeper into the gloop.

Yet few people outside economics are making a full-throated defence of stimulus spending as an urgent moral cause. We need to say it loud: the choice today is between a deficit and a depression. It is immoral not to borrow and spend when it could revive the economy and prevent all these lives being written off. I remember what happened to some of my relatives in the eighties. The children who are supposedly being protected from the cost of the debt a generation from now need, in reality, to be protected today - from their parents becoming jobless and depressed, their homes being repossessed, and their schools and hospitals being chronically underfunded.

None of this has to happen. The more fuss ordinary citizens make -- the more we demand the axe is put away, and replaced with jump-leads for the economy -- the less leeway the government will have for self-defeating cuts. But so far, the loudest citizens' movement has been the lunacy of the tea party, demanding the economy be Herbert Hoovered up. Why is the fight-back so tepid? Why are so many people limply waiting for the disaster to worsen?

Here's a financial tip to leave you with. If you hold any bonds in swaggering Deficit Hawkery, sell. They are about to slip from the AAA standard accorded by the right-wing press to junk status out here in the real world.

Red Tape Sends Entrepreneur Overseas - Video - FoxNews.com

Red tape sends entrepreneur overseas, that's the title of this video, and the interviewers are seen trying to insist that it was bureaucratic red tape that is holding back the US from adopting the same technology that China has contracted with this guy. Except to anyone who's actually listening to what the interviewee was saying, he never said anything about the bureaucracy, in fact it was simply that China was interested in the technology and actively recruited him where as that is not what happened in the US.
The real question, if faux had any real reporters, would be why is it that the US government doesn't pursue the same technology that an American company co-developed with Rice University?
Because the answer wouldn't fit the conservative narrative, that being blame regulation and government.
But the interviewee states that the white house has been on board with this - notice how the two interviewers were quick to block that from being continued all together.
Quite the conundrum, after all, clean technology doesn't fit into the conservative narrative at all, it's quite the contrary to conservative narrative. What would be the point of clean technology to those who don't think there's any need and all it is is but a scientific conspiracy to make money?

Pakistan cancels talks in protest at Cameron remarks

Pakistan's intelligence agency cancelled planned talks with security experts in the UK in protest at David Cameron's claim that elements within the country were promoting the export of terror, it was reported today.

The cancelled trip is the most concrete indication so far of damage done to Anglo-Pakistani relations by Mr Cameron's comments, which sparked outrage in Islamabad when he made them during this week's trip to India.

It comes days ahead of a three-day visit to the UK by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, during which he is expected to stay with Mr Cameron at his country retreat Chequers.

The Times reported that senior officers from Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had been due to come to London for talks on counter-terrorism co-operation with British security services.

But an ISI spokesman told the paper: "The visit has been cancelled in reaction to the comments made by the British Prime Minister against Pakistan."

Answering questions following a speech in India, Mr Cameron said he wanted to see "a strong, stable and democratic Pakistan", adding: "But we cannot tolerate in any sense the idea that this country is allowed to look both ways and is able, in any way, to promote the export of terror whether to India, whether to Afghanistan or to anywhere else in the world."

His comments triggered an angry response from Pakistani politicians, who pointed to the country's military offensive against militants on the frontier with Afghanistan and the many victims of terrorist bombs in Pakistan.

But he did not take advantage of several opportunities to scale down his rhetoric during subsequent press conferences and interviews before his return to the UK.

The ISI spokesman said: "Such irresponsible statements could affect our co-operation with Britain."

Pakistan is regarded by UK agencies as a key nation in the fight against terror, with a majority of plots against British targets believed to have links to the country. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown said that 75% of terror plots under investigation in the UK were linked to Pakistan.

Neither Downing Street nor the Foreign Office would comment on the reported decision by the ISI not to visit the UK.

But officials said that Mr Zardari's visit to the UK was still expected to go ahead as planned.

"Our understanding is that the visit is on," said a Foreign Office spokeswoman.
