Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Crime and Punishment by Doestyevsky. Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. Animal Farm by George Orwell. Crash by JG Ballard. American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis. Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann. I think my first choice is one of the most aesthetically beautiful books ever written. Conrad never wrote a bad book but Heart of Darkness is one of his best. Crime and Punishment and Doctor Faustus make many demands of the reader but ultimately the effort is well worth it. Crash and American Psycho are both first rate examples of the 'kinetic 'novel and Animal Farm and Gullivers Travels are there because they are both a really good engaging read.

Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut - to remind me that civilisation contains the seeds of its own destruction The Once and Future King by T H White - so I don't forget the better side of the human spirit The Human Stain by Philip Roth - just for the pleasure of reading Roth's most satisfying novel The Oxford Book of English Verse - to give me years of thematic reading and simple dipping in, as well as to preserve my language skills The Isles by Norman Davies - it's a BIG book and I'd need the time to re-read it Essential Bushcraft by Ray Mears - for practical purposes The Complete Works of Shakespeare - cheating, but it would certainly keep me reading - and performing - for years The Bible (Authorised Version) - for the stories, the poetry and the tradition That's today's choice. Tomorrow's might be different in some respects.
