Default Thanking

I think that the thanking is a feature that, in my opinion, we don't need.

No, it's that it will clutter up the threads. I see certain types of forums needing thanks...But this one, not really.

It appears that you're going to make sure that happens.

Don't needit because of a cheerleading croud with pompoms? I can see where that would run amuck, but think about it this way Ninja, your arguments that a certain political leaning always cheers their bunch no matter the statement as long as it's toeing the party line will become all that more obvious.
Maybe we need a "no thanks" button too?

You didn't understand my remark. Ninja was trying to tell Dave "thanks, but no thanks" as far as the new thanking feature is concerned.

Yet, even if I don't use it, I still see the clutter.

What benefit do you get by being thanked? as fat as I'm concerned it does not serve any practical purpose now a infraction indicator would be different.

Keep the counters, lose the 'thanked by' annotations at the bottom of posts.

In addition to cluttering up the thread, I fear the matter of been seen to thank or not thank complicates the 'appreciation' in an undesirable way.

I don't agree. I have used the thanks option where in the past I would have quoted the post and posted my thanks. So in my view it relieves clutter and makes threads less complicated, not more.

Quote and thank if you wish. As far as that goes, the thank-you annotations look like clutter mainly becasue we're not used to them. But I think a simple, anonymous thanks-counter would provide a different and desirable feedback opportunity. Anonimity will get some people to hit the button who wouldn't otherwise, while in turn removing some people's motivation to hit it. I think the quality of the feedback goes up, both times.
