Balkanization is just as Zan described it.

It's not a "slur" of any sort.

What would you know? You're only a professor of linguistics. Have you consulted a licensed Islamic scholar?

The success of our forum is dependent upon the intelligence of our posters.

I believe I heard that somewhere...?

I didn't claim it was. I claimed it was hostile, which is part and parcel of the definition of the word.

Aside from your perception that it is hostile, what evidence do you have that the word contains hostility?

It's called a dictionary, however, for the record:
Quote:
Balkanization or balkanisation is a geopolitical term originally used to describe the process of fragmentation or division of a region or state into smaller regions or states that are often hostile or non-cooperative with each other
Quote:
To divide (a region or territory) into small, often hostile units.
Quote:
  • to divide (a country, territory, etc.) into small, quarrelsome, ineffectual states.
  • (often lowercase) to divide (groups, areas, etc.) into contending and usually ineffectual factions
The word itself infers hostility, however I dare say the protagonists will disagree vehemently.

Ah, ok, I bow to your lexical talents.

Indeed. How could you question someone who doesn't even know the difference between an inference and an implication?

Quote:
Infer has been used to mean “to hint or suggest” since the 16th century by speakers and writers of unquestioned ability and eminence: The next speaker criticized the proposal, inferring that it was made solely to embarrass the government. Despite its long history, many 20th-century usage guides condemn the use, maintaining that the proper word for the intended sense is imply and that to use infer is to lose a valuable distinction between the two words.
Although the claimed distinction has probably existed chiefly in the pronouncements of usage guides, and although the use of infer to mean “to suggest” usually produces no ambiguity, the distinction too has a long history and is widely observed by many speakers and writers. source
So much fun, at another's expense.

Indeed.

A speaker implies ("suggests") something; a listener infers (or "deduces").

Examples:
The manager implied that I was a bad risk. I inferred from her remarks that she thought I was lazy.

I checked a few of my sources, and none of them hinted that Australian English used these verbs in any manner different from the other dialects of English...Just where is, "Here?" You mean, in Antiphonland?

Prove it. You want to get into semantics? I'm pretty good at that game as well. Re-read what I posted from an authoritative source. The terminologies are interchangeable and have been for centuries. Like I say, you want to get into semantics, then that's fine by me.
