| Sarah Palin: conservatives find the girl of their dreams ![]() When Sarah Palin stepped into the spotlight as John McCain’s running mate in Dayton, Ohio, and promised that women could “shatter that glass ceiling once and for all”, it was an electrifying moment in a presidential election that had already produced its share of upsets and surprises. History was on the march again the morning after Barack Obama became the first African-American to accept his party’s White House nomination. After the fireworks, the 80,000-strong crowd who had cheered Obama to the skies at the Mile High stadium in Denver woke up with a hangover. “We may be seeing the first woman president. As a Democrat, I am reeling,” said Camille Paglia, the cultural critic. “That was the best political speech I have ever seen delivered by an American woman politician. Palin is as tough as nails.” With her beehive hairdo and retro specs, Palin, 44, has a “naughty librarian vibe”, according to Craig Ferguson, the Scottish comedian who stars on late-night US television. However, the selection of Palin, the governor of Alaska and a mother of five, as the first female Republican vice-presidential nominee is no joke for the I'M JUMPING TO THE END OF THE ARTICLE, BECAUSE THIS IS VERY LONG, BUT I WILL PROVIDE THE LINK SO YOU CAN STILL READ THE WHOLE PIECE http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...SS&attr=797093 I'm posting the last paragraph so I can comment on it. In fact, even though the Clinton aides could barely conceal their satisfaction when she was chosen, the woman who Palin upstages most of all is Hillary. If Obama wins the election, Hillary will have to wait until 2016 to stand again. And if he loses, Palin will be first in line to become America’s first woman president. Hillary will be 76 years old in 2016 so if Obama wins it's simply not going to happen for her. .

For some reason I thought she was older than 60. Anyway... she's 68 at that time. I see her as old news with no political edge by that time.

Right over my head Neko. It took me years to begin to get Monty Python.

It's a reference to this story. And I still don't get Monty Python...

He is suggesting that Labour wishes Grodon Brown would die in office. I think....

Thanks Don. Neko, did they hope for his demise (after he takes office) before they elected him? I was thinking about what I look at when considering a leader. One of those things is if their personal character flaws conflict with the values they promote, and how they handle that, if they are honest about it, how they resolve it. Sarah lost my respect when she decided against following a family value she says she shares with me and others - that if at all possible the mother stays home to nuture the child through it's formative years. If it turns out she's Grandma Palin and not Mama Palin, I'll understand why she did it, and that she was in between a rock and a hard place, but as a politician, a leader, she'll be dead to me. Unfortunately this seems to be an epidemic among GOP politicos.

I think it's a defect of the Anglo-Saxon political system that it puts too much weight on politicians personal lives. Okay, I'm partly to blame for this as I love reading infidelity/secret offspring/gay midget orgy stories as much as anyone, but I'm also convinced that the habit of printing them is bad for everyone (except the hacks, natch). It stops many of the most accomplished people from going into politics, and assures that the vast majority of candidates are the political equivalent of nursery food. |

I'm right there with you Neko, unless they make it part of their campaign. Those that want their personal lives kept personal don't make the personal life decisions of others their election platform. Something about walking the talk.

America has so many strange taboos, it's just so damned odd. Who was the comedian, George Carlin, who said, "You can see someone get shot and killed, hacked up, killed in any way, you can see a life END, but no breasts or sex...No CREATION of life, just ending.

"But as for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does everyday? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question." - Palin Perhaps when McCain vetted her, he should have given her a job description to go on... I've heard Palin described as the "female Dan Quayle". I have to say, I'm looking forward to the debates...

A veep is someone who can call the President on the phone, and get them. That is power. Palin will catch on in a few days....

Clownboy was the one who actually pointed out my mistake and I acknowledged it, and that was that. See, this is the way adults communicate. You'll catch on.
