The blasphemy law is the harshest tool for religious repression available in Pakistan. It was adopted in 1986 by then dictator Zia ul-Haq to protect Islam and its prophet, Muhammad, from attacks and insults.

In fact, it is actually comprised of sections 295-B and 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code, which respectively punish with life in prison anyone who defiles, damages or desecrates a copy of the Holy Qur‘an, and imposes the death penalty on anyone who defiles the name of the Prophet Muhammad.

In the last two months, there were two more convictions against Christians in Pakistan.

On 11 January, a court in Faisalabad sentenced Imran Masih, a 26-year-old Christian man, to life imprisonment for insulting and desecrating the Koran. He was accused of deliberately burning Qur‘anic verses and an Arabic book in order “foment interfaith hatred and hurt the feelings of Muslims.”

On 25 February, a court in Karachi sentenced Qamar David, also a Christian, to life imprisonment for hurting the religious feelings of Muslims when he sent blasphemous SMS.

What constitutes a Chillul Hashem (desecration of G-d's Name)? - g-d what is g-d?

“Chillul Hashem” (pronounced KHIH-lool hah-SHEM) means “Desecration of G-d’s Name.” Colloquially, it refers to personal acts/behaviors that give G-d, Judaism, Torah/Mitzvot or Jews a bad name and a bad reputation.
But in its legal sense, it refers to when a Jew is faced with the choice of a) committing one of the three cardinal sins (accepting another god or religion, murder or certain illicit sexual relations), or b) execution. If s/he chooses “a” instead of “b” that is a Chillul Hashsem.

Why is it a Chillul Hashem? Why should he die? About five years ago there was a van full of Asians en-route from the airport to the convention center, here in my town. During their journey the driver of the van thought he new a "shortcut" to the convention center which involved driving through a gang infested neighborhood. When the van came to a stop light the gangbangers (bloods) hangin out on the corner noticed that the driver and passenger were wearing the color blue. Being that wearing the color blue in a 'Blood' neighborhood is against urban customs the Asians were greeted with violence. The Bloods then pulled their guns and ordered everyone out of the van. The Asians were robbed, beaten, stripped of their blue, and also had their van stolen. Long story short: The authorities didn't lock the Asians up for offending the customs they went after the gangbangers and put them in prison for 20 years.
